BEST THINGS TO VISIT IN SPLIT
1. DIOCLETIAN'S PALACE
Diocletian’s Palace was built in 305 for the Roman Emperor Diocletian. This huge retirement complex is located in the centre of the old town of Split.
Over the centuries, the city of Split grew around Diocletian’s Palace, and during that time many palace buildings remained intact. Diocletian’s Palace is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If you visit Split, one thing you should do is explore Diocletian’s Palace.
Important places within Diocletian’s Palace include the Peristyle (the centre of the palace), the Cardo (one of the main streets through the palace) and the basement. If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, the basement is the filming location. Daenerys kept her dragons here when she was in Meereen.
On this walking tour of the old town, visit the Diocletian’s Palace, the Cathedral of Saint Domnius and the Riva Promenade.
2. BELL OF THE CATHEDRAL OF ST. DOMNIUS
The Cathedral of St. Domnius is located within the Diocletian’s Palace. This is the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world, completed in the 7th century AD.
For the best view of the city, climb the bell tower.
3. OLD TOWN
The old town of Split is a labyrinth of streets and paved alleys that surround Diocletian’s Palace. The People’s Square is the heart of the Old Town.
The square is lined with cafés and restaurants and one of the highlights of a visit here is the view of the old town clock.
4. TAKE A WALK ALONG THE RIVA PROMENADE
Riva is the port of Split. The palm trees, colourful buildings and views of the Adriatic Sea make this a popular place for walking.
5. CLIMB MARJAN HILL
The Marjan peninsula is located west of the Old Town. A number of paths cross the peninsula. For another beautiful view of the city, consider a walk up Marjan Hill.
After our visit to Split, I learned that there is a better viewpoint (and requires a lot less walking!). The lookout point on Google maps is called Prva Vidilica Na Marjanu. To get here, walk along Šperun Street (this road starts west of Riva) to Senjska Street. Climb the stairs to the lookout point.
6. VISIT TROGIR
Trogir is a separate coastal town only 35 minutes away by car or bus and an hour by ferry. This is a beautiful, small town that should be visited.
The entire Old Town is located on the island. You can visit Trogir in just an hour or two, if you move super fast, but half a day or longer is ideal.
For full details on transportation options to and from Trogir, click here. You can also combine a visit to Trogir with a speedboat trip from Split that includes the Blue Lagoon and other nearby islands.
7. PUTALJ WINERY
If you want to visit a Croatian winery, Putalj Winery is only 20 minutes away from Split. The winery offers tours that include transportation to and from your hotel.
Reservations are required. Visit their website for more information.
8. ZINFANDEL WINE BAR
If a short trip to a winery is not in your plans, but you still want to taste Croatian wine, visit the Zinfandel Wine Bar. Located in the Old Town, our team loves this place. Excellent food, excellent wine and excellent ambience.
9. KLIS FORTRESS
This ancient fortress has a long history, being the site of numerous battles with the Templar knights, the Ottomans and the Mongols, to name a few. Now the ruins of the fortress are located high on the slope overlooking Split.
Not only does the Klis fortress offer a panoramic view of Split and the Dalmatian coast, but it is also the Game of Thrones filming location for Meereen.
10. TRY CROATIAN DISHES
In Split, you can try Croatian dishes in numerous restaurants. Seafood is very popular and fish and prawns fresh from the sea are served every evening. We’ve eaten at some great places that we highly recommend, and you can find them here.
